Tonight, there was a rained out, abandoned match, with only 20 overs bowled. SA were batting, and my man JK got his chance to prove me right again.

He started like a bat out of hell (at least, by his standards), and I thought that for once I would have to eat humble pie. If memory serves, he had 10 off 12 balls, and I think 17 off 20. So far, so good.

But when the rain came down, he had 24 off 43 (strike rate of 55.81). The innings total at that point came off a strike rate of 65.5. He was an entire 10 points off the innings SR!! And, his last 7 runs took 23 runs, or an SR of 30.43.

AND ALL OF THIS WAS DURING POWER PLAYS!! This is when we're supposed to be hitting out.

Why, oh why, do we persist with this man?

PS - someone emailed me that its because his career average is 44. Yes, but his average for the last 25 games is only 30! (33 average for his last 30 games). And at a dismal strike rate!!

That's not a form issue - not over 2 to 3 seasons. That's a fundamental attitude and style issue.

My one-man crusade continues. Drop Jacques Kallis from the one day squad!!

Hey G, I'm interested to hear what your ideal ODI batting line-up is then, warranted everybody is fit?

Mine is

Smith
de Villiers
Dippenaar
Gibbs
Prince
Kemp
Boucher
Pollock
Ntini
Nel
Steyn (the boy needs a good run)

SUB Boje (the joy of him as a sub is he caters for batting and bowling roles)

Langeveldt can't seem to get any consistency going in his first seven overs - just not good enough. He's a bit too hot and cold for my liking.

Its amazing to me that even in the official cricket stats, available at www.cricinfo.com, a batsman's strike rate is not listed. In ODI's this is a critical measurement of success.

Today is the 3rd ODI. Jacques Kallis is not playing (feeling a little ill, apparently). But his namesake, Jacques Rudolph seems afflicted with the same bat-slow disease.

I didn't watch the second ODI, but seeing the scorecard, I am amazed (see here. Kallis gets 51, but off 94 balls. Its a top score for the innings, and the team was in trouble on what was obviously a tough wicket.

Yet, the team gets 201. Which is a strike rate of 67. Kallis' strike rate is 54!! And, he gets out just a few balls after his partner, Boucher! Everytime this is what happens.

He then gets subbed and doesn't bowl at all...

What are they thinking?

Yesterday, Jacques finally came right as a bowler! Hooray. He even bowled the last over of the innings (so, why did he not bowl on Friday's Pro20???).

But as a batsman, he continued his one day form: 0 off 5 balls.

Oh, and why did Graeme Smith not bowl Jacques in the Pro20 match? Rather, he bowls himself with 3 overs to go and defending 16 runs. He gets all 16 taken off of him in that over (including a front foot no ball - off a spinner).

You've got to really not trust your "world's best all rounder" to refuse to bowl him...

The saga continues. I went to the Pro20 International between SA and NZ on Friday night. I arrived a bit late, and to my utter non amazement, the scoreboard read: G Smith 54, J Kallis 9 when I arrived. These were the two openers! Sure, Smith had more of the bowling, but how does Jacques get away with a test match innings in Pro20?

In the first 7 overs, when the field is in, you have to go crazy - ala Smith. AND, if you feel your role is to play anchor for the innings, then you CANNOT go out just a few balls after the other guy does... How often does JK do that???

It was based almost entirely on his 5 Test centuries in a row. As I have said, he is my first choice test player. He is SUCH a star test player, that they can't drop him as a passenger in the ODIs. THAT'S MY WHOLE POINT!!

In the final ICC World X! vs Australia, Kallis bowled 1.2 overs for 11 runs and scored 2 off of 10. Enough said (for now).
