Computer Games at School - Your help needed

Computer gamesI do quite a bit of work with my girls’ school, and have convinced them to start a computer games club at the school - as an extra mural option for the girls at the school.

But, now, they’ve asked me which games I would recommend. What would you suggest?

They obviously would be interested specifically in multi-player games. What would you suggest?

Then, they have hardware constraints. Specifically, they don’t have great graphics cards. If you were limited in this way, what would you then recommend?

Two free games, available online are:

“America’s Army, first released by the US military as a recruitment tool in 2002. It is a free downloadable and strikingly realistic war game, covering basic training, tactical planning and a variety of missions and now has over 5 million registered players. http://www.americasarmy.com/downloads/

The United Nations has “Food Force which was released by the World Food Program, intending to raise awareness for global hunger with players acting as emergency aid workers. There are also many browser based games on the Internet, and these are becoming more and more popular. http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/games/action_adventure/foodforce.html

The type of games that the school will be looking for are MMPORGS [Massively multiplayer role-playing games]. All of these games are web-based and require minimal hardware capacity & capability. most of them are quest type games where players set out to attain skills and tools to facilitate life in this virtual world. Some parental / adult supervision or vetting may be required to gauge the appropriate level of violence and ‘Harry Potter style magic’ in some of them.

The great thing about MMPORGS is that you are able to log in & out at will so kids can engage in them as extra-murals over an extended period of time. All of these games also allow players to interact virtually so it will be possible to create online teams thereby making the exercise social rather than solitary.

Two great pkaces to start with free online games (some are MMPORGS others aren’t) are http://www.ea.com http://www.miniclip.com http://zone.msn.com http://www.pogo.com [should get to this site via ea.com]

Beck’s book ‘Got Game’ would be a good read to pass along to the school to provide the theory support for the development of gaming as a school activity. [I have a copy if you want to have a look at it first] We also have just short of twenty articles on gaming in the TomorrowToday resource library.

Great push on your part. I’m sure the school will benefit from this initiative.

Um… Grand Theft Auto? You can dub the language :)

Hmm, seems like a no-brainer to me, ask the kids what they want to play - and have the guts to let them play it. They’re going to do it anyway…!

I see I’m getting to this note a bit late. All “MMPORGS” aside, I think there is one game everyone should play, at least once: Myst.

It is a very challenging game for most, requiring a bit of patience, a measure of curiosity, and intuition. There are puzzles in this game, which are not exactly made known to the player. You often have to figure out the what the puzzle is before you can get at the solution.
